Clay Worker’s Tragic End

The body of Cosmas Samuel Burden aged 71 a labourer in clay works who had been missing since the previous Wednesday was
found on common land in the parish of Corfe Mullen on Saturday and at the enquiry conducted at the Mission Hall on Boxing Day
by the coroner for the Hundred Mr Hy. O. Chislett and the jury of whom Mr J. T Playfair Heatley was foreman, a verdict was
returned to the effect that the supposed cause of death was a fit of epilepsy and the severe cold. The jury gave their fees to
the widow.

Rose Burden widow of the deceased said she last saw her husband alive the previous Wednesday at noon. He did not enjoy good
health. He intimated he intended to go to Mrs Marlow’s at Beacon Hill with some gooseberry cuttings and she did not hear anything
of him until Saturday morning. In the meantime she had made enquiries but without result. The deceased was subject to epileptic
fits and had one about a month ago.

Catherine Marlow widow of Beacon Hill said deceased came to her house the previous Wednesday between 12:30 and 1 pm with some
gooseberry cuttings for planting. He remained about half to three quarters of an hour when he left saying he was going to meet
someone down the road. At 3:30 she saw him passing her house as if he was going home. From his appearance he seemed quite sober
at that time and she cautioned him as the road was very slippery owing to the frost to be careful. He was in the habit of working
for her.

William Carter landlord of the Holme Bush Inn, Corfe Mullen said deceased was at his house on Wednesday at 2:30 pm and had 2 pints
of ale and remained a little over an hour. When he came in he was perfectly sober and left in the same condition.

William Edward Groves son of PC Groves of Lytchett Minster gave evidence as to the finding of the body about 200 yards on the
boundary side of Corfe Mullen lying on his back. He had the appearance of having been dead for some time. There was no appearance
of a struggle. A verdict was returned as indicated.
