AIRMAN SON REPORTED "MISSING"

FATHER DIES WHILE MAKING
INQUIRIES AT AERODROME

LATE MR. T. HAMMOND OF STORTFORD

On Tuesday morning Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hammond of Grange View,
London Road, Bishop's Stortford, received official notification
that their son Robert was "missing believed killed" while in
action the previous day with the R.A.F.
Mr. Hammond was driven to the aerodrome at which his son was

A TRIBUTE

Many people in Bishop's Stortford will greatly miss "Tommy"
Hannond's genial personality, writes a Hertfordshire Mercury
reporter. His business as a taxi proprietor made him well-known,
and he was always willing to do anyone a good turn whenever
possible.
Mr. Hammond, after dropping a fare, rarely drove far without
finding someone to whom he could give a lift. He was 65 years
of ageand was an army pensioner. He served with the 2nd Battalion
the Essex Regiment in the South African War, and in the Great War,
and rose to the rank of Regimental-Sergeant-Major. At one time he
was attached to a Nigerian Regiment. In addition to the widow,
Mr. Hammond leaves a married daughter.
Sergt Robert Hammond, who served as a R.A.F. observer, joined the
service on leaving Bishop's Stortford College about a year ago.
