Two Malayans Among Colonial Officials For Cargnegie Trust Grant

To enable selected British colonial officials to "spend a year away from duty to further their studies, carry out research and travel," the Carnegie Trustees have made a grant of $48,000 (U.S.).

Included in the list of selected men are two Malayan officials. They are : Mr. V.W.W.S.Purcell, acting protector of Chinese, Penang, and Mr. W.C.Gee, Engineer in Charge at the Petaling Hill Radio Station, Kuala Lumpur.

Mr. Purcell's grant is to enable him to study Basic English at Cambridge University, while Mr. Gee will investigate short wave radio telephony developments in the United States, United Kingdom and elsewhere.

MR. GEE'S WAR RECORD

War service with Jellicoe's battleships at Jutland and in the Harwich Submarine Floitilla on patrol duty lies behind Mr. Walter Charles Gee, of Kuala Lumpur who has been given a Carnegie grant to study radio telephony in various countries. Mr. Gee, at prsent Assistant Wireless Engineer, Posts and telegraph Department S.S. and F.M.S., a post which includes inspectionof Government radio stations in Selangor and Pahang and also as far afield as Kuala Krau in Kelantan. He is a member of the Institute of Wireless Tecnology and Associate of the Institute of Electrical Engineers.

Native of Hertfordshire he graduated from the Technical Institute at Bishop's Stortford and the Royal Technical Schools.

IN FAR EAST

After the war Mr. Gee came out to the Far East and became officer in charge of Cape D'Aguilar Wireless Station at Hong Kong, where he fitted out the China Sea Flotilla Submarines with eqipments.

He was transferred to Malaya in 1930 and has been operating Petaling Hill Station ever since. Mr. Gee has been participating in tests of the Malaya-Europe radio telephone, which, it is hoped, will be into operation soon.
